Autumn is upon us and while it still feels like summer in Richmond there are seasonal preparations that homeowners and renters need to complete this month. Here are a few suggestions to consider.

  • Smoke Detectors: One of the most important items is your smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector. Smoke detectors will alert you in the case of a fire and if you have a fireplace or gas heat/hot water the carbon monoxide detector is an absolute must have! Remember: they won't save your life if the batteries don't work. Please change you batteries now and add this to your calendar to do each year at the same time and you won't forget.
  • Fireplace: Have a professional check your fireplace for leaks and have it cleaned if needed. Call early, appointments fill up this time of year.
  • Windows & Doors: With heating and fuel costs on the rise, check your windows and doors for gaps where air can escape. If you can see light coming through your doorframe, use a good weather strip to fill the gap.
  • Window/Door Screens & Units: Replace window and door screens with storm window inserts and remove air conditioning units for the winter.
  • Crawl Space: If you have a crawl space, close the vents to keep cold air from entering the space. This will keep the floors warmer. Also, while you are doing this, drain you water spigot so the pipes don't freeze.
  • Gutters: Clean gutters and downspouts after the leaves have fallen to prevent water from backing up into the roof and causing leaks.
  • Furnace Filters: Change your furnace filters. This is a simple and easy thing to do and keeping the filter clean will prolong the life of the furnace. Also, use a HEPA filter is you have allergies. If you buy in bulk you can save money and you will have filters available when they need changing.
