Houses for Sale in Glen Allen and Short Pump

Well-Appointed Homes, Shopping, and Entertainment

The Far West End of Richmond is the whole package: Lots of beautiful planned communities with premium amenities, world-class shopping and dining, and a great location. Whether you’re just starting out with a young family or downsizing to a smaller abode as an empty nester, there’s a community to suit your tastes and lifestyle.

Home of Richmond’s original planned community, Wellesley, the Short Pump and Glen Allen areas feature an array of others much like it including Wyndham, Twin Hickory, and Fox Hall. Each feature walking and biking trails, large playgrounds, water features, one even with a championship-level golf course and country club.

The Short Pump area, once a sleepy outpost of Richmond, came to be known as such for a water pump under the porch of a circa-1815 tavern that stood along Three Chopt Road–then the main thoroughfare and stagecoach route between Richmond and Charlottesville–which stood about where the present-day Walmart is. The water pump had an unusually short handle, a portion of which was cut off when the tavern’s porch was extended above, so travelers could get a full stroke of water. Folks began telling one another, “I’ll meet you at the short pump,” and the name stuck.

Since then, the area has grown tremendously, with a variety of established homes and new construction still underway alike.

Cabell’s Take

Richmond’s “fashionable” West End boasts nationally-recognized schools from the elementary to high school levels, beautiful Colonial and traditional style homes, many of which with handsome brick façades and large lots, and is close to pretty much any amenity you could want in the Richmond area. The market may be hot, but the West End is even hotter–and will be for many years to come.
